Taiwan reached 300 thousandth of the Postcrossing ID, and I was the lucky guy to get it. In fact, I did not think to join the number fight until I accumulated 5 send-postcard quota about one week ago because I was too busy to write any postcard. When the number was close, I got  9 of quota. I thought I must be the one to get this milestone.

Saturday afternoon, many Taiwanese postcrossers stared at their computer screen. Some people joined plurk discussion and another few people talked on facebook club. When I saw someone reported TW-29997X, I thought it was time to draw.

It was so much fun to draw so many postcrossing ID and address at one time. I checked out the 300000th one first. She liked architecture and the sender's hometown.

I rarely sent the skyscraper Taipei 101 for postcrossing because it was not a common view in Taiwan. But to match this milestone, I thought Taipei 101 is a good choice for the receiver's interests. It was the modern representative of my lovely Taipei. Do you think I made a good choice?

This postcard was registered on the same day I sent it.

It usually taked two or three days to send a postcard to another Taiwanese postcrosser in Taiwan. So if I got the address on Thursday or Friday, it would take two days longer and reach after the weekend. So when I got this address, I was not quite happy. However, I laughed out after checking the receiver's name.

He was the younger classmates in my university club, Penpal and Philately Association (PAPA). I sent him a message on Facebook then he registered it earlier than I went out to mail it.

The postcards I sent are all written by hand. Thus, handwriting in postcard exchange is important. When we talk about writing, we can not miss out stationery. We now write with a pen or a ball-pen. However, Chinese has special traditional stationery, brush, ink, paper, and inkstone,  which we call four treasures of the study.

I went to a stamp dealer shop last September and found a set of maximum cards which I like very much, National Palace Museum postcards of traditional Chinese Stationery. They were issued by the post office in 2000.

While we could not have the treasure in the museum, we could have the same treasure in a stamp dealer's shop. Although my stationery is not very high class, those nice stationery was not used and was kept for ages. No one uses them.

A Snail Mail From Tung-yin (Dongyin)

Tung-yin (Dongyin) was not in the landmark postmark list in 2002, so there is no match official postal card. I did not notice that there is a special postmark and did not think I would do some postal work there.

Luckily, a friend who collects stamps reminded me to check out the website of the post office. Yes, there is one. There is also a local panoramic postcard set (8 pieces for NT$150.-) available in a local souvenir shop. (Click the last two pictures to see the eight cards.)

I arrived Tung-yin on Friday, 27 August and planned to leave on Tuesday. I could send all my postcard on Monday but it would be fun to let friends get souvenirs before I went back home. So I rushed to the post office on Friday afternoon, on Monday, ... on Wednesday... and on Friday. Because the ship was stopped by Typhoon Namtheum, I was stuck on the island. So was all post.

I left Tung-yin on 6 September and the trip to a little township ended up to 11 days. The postcard to myself (the top one) was sent on 27 August and reached on 7 September. What a domestic post and what a snail mail!

Words and Legends /

I'm going to tell a legend to Karolina for return of her two stories. Base on her interests of postcard theme, I choose calligraphy art of traditional Chinese culture. This postcard is from National Taiwan University Faculties, Staff and Students Union Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Art. This year is the fourth time of the exhibition.

Traditional Chinese characters are truly treasures of east Asia. There are many races using them to write their spoken languages. Some races even have derivation characters for their own languages.

Legend of character creation is like this:

Cangjie, (pronounced like Ts'ang-chieh) was the saint who created Chinese characters. In the legends, he had four eyes and there are two pupils in each. This is usually one special feature of saints. He was the history keep officer of the Yellow Emperor. After unifying China, the Emperor needed to remember more things. So he was not satisfied with 'rope knot tying' method, and asked Cangjie to solve this problem.

One day, Cangjie thought of this issue along the riverside. A phoenix flew by and dropped a stick with one animal footprint. While He was wonder what animal made the print, a hunter walked by and told him, 'I can recognise all animals by their footprints'. The idea came into Cangjie's mind. Yes, he could use lines to record everything's feature stroke by stroke.

According to a history book, after he created characters, it rained millet from the heaven and ghosts cried at late night. It is because the nature could not hide its secret and the ghosts could not transform freely. People can write to record and describe.

The Chinese characters transformed several times. The fonts we use nowadays are similar with the ones our ancestors used 2,000 years ago. However, mainland China simplified characters in 1950's and now uses different fonts from Taiwan. We Chinese Taiwanese now still use traditional Chinese while Chinese in China use non-traditional.

The couplet is read like this:
The scenery of the country is good everywhere.
The rain and dew wash everything to a new look.

Post Taiwan to the World, Share the Spirit /

The CommonWealth Magazine group launched a new activity of 'smile of 319', 'Post Taiwan to the World' on 25 July. They selected 25 images of Taiwan and printed 100 millions postcards to let everyone to post to the world.

It is no doubt that 25 images cannot represent a country, but they surely show the beauty of Taiwan, passion, hospitality, art, life, tradition, modern, technology, simple and plain, and so forth. I am not used to buy mass printing postcards in chain bookstore, but special kind limited in scenic area. However, I would like not only post these postcards, but also collect them.

Thank all friends for exchanging postcards with me. You make my collection complete. Also wish you who get my postcards of this set like it.

God Bless Taiwan, Pray for Taiwan /

This postcard is still on my desk. I'm going to send it later in the morning. But I cannot wait to write my blog to share with the world.

Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot in early August. The atrocious weather brought almost annual amount rainfall in four days and caused flood and mudslide. Thousands of citizens lost their homes and hundreds of folks lost their lives. The rescue team is still in action. We could be hit but can not be beaten. We, Taiwanese, now are calling the world to pray for us by this postcard.

God bless Taiwan, and pray for the victims.

It arrives on 28 Aug. Great!

This postcard was purchased during my Alishan trip in mid January. It was Lake Sisters which was a famouse place of Taiwan in China. I sent to a Chinese in March and emailed him to check whether it arrived or not in April. Unfortunately, it was missing by report on 2 May. The lake was in the deep forest and always in the mist.  Now the postcard of the misty lake would never have been known where it is.

What makes a city a capital of a country? It is hard to tell. I promised a friend living in Canberra, the capital of Australia, to send him a postcard. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, so I decided to find some capital image from capital to capital. The Presidentail Hall of Taiwan is not the greatest building in Taipei, but as the office of the president, it is representative enough.

I went the southern end of the Taiwan island for a work trip. Before going south, I bought two sets of Pingtung postcards. I also pickec up one from the post office official Taiwan scenic set. I think sending a postcard is a good way to let friends know what you are doing immediately. Or you would never have a chance to talk about the trip.

I was too busy to write anything on the postcard on the trip, so I left the place in blank. When I dorped it to the mailbox, it stucked. The mailbox was full of letters and postcards. I wondered what were be written and sent? I hoped they tell their friends the beauty of the nature in this National Park, not only the party they had and the busy night market.

I bought this postcard in mid-January when I was in a trip to the south of Taiwan. This picture is about the flower, plum in the mountain Ali. (we call the mountain, Alishan.) I choose this postcard because I saw you sent out some plant postcards. Also, the background is another mountain in Taiwan. It's the highest mountain Yushan, Mt. Jade. It's 3,952 m high and is in the National Park. Of course it is a landmark.

I saw you already got a mailbox postcard and several sunsets from Taiwan. I was going to send you a flower, but at the second thought, I found you have sunset in sea, in city. So here is the sunset in the mountain. (and flower stamp) Taiwan is a mountainous country. In our little island, we have 258 mountains over 3,000 meters high. This postcard is Mt. Nan-hu. Although it's not the highest, mountaineers honor it as king of the mountains because of it style.

Two weeks ago, it was life science week. Department of life science had book sale, and photos, postcards and so on. I bought this card there. It's a tree frog. There are ten species of tree frog in Taiwan, and seven of them are only found in Taiwan. Taiwan is an island located in a very good place for life creatures. We are at subtropical and tropical boundary, so the weather is just right.

I am not an animal expert, so I can not recognise what species it is. So I only told Satu about tree frog in Taiwan. I checked the frog database and I guess it is Orange-Belly Green Tree Frog (Rhacophorus aurantiventris) or Emerald Green Tree Frog(Rhacophorus prasinatus). No matter which it is, it is an endemic and endangered species in Taiwan. Satu likes insects and wild animal postcards. I hope this frog goes well with his other insects. :)

Sun Moon Lake by night--

Sun Moon Lake is in the central Taiwan and is a popular tourism destination for most international tourists. It used to be smaller, but after a dam was built, it expanded and became bigger. There are some special kinds creatures in the eco-system. And because of the beautiful scene, it's surely a treasure of our country.

Chung Cheng Park, Taichung, Taiwan
The park is in the northern part of Taichung City. It has such facilities as a fountain. kiddieland, swimming pool, tennis court, and an artificial lake.

Taiwan is an island country between Japan and Philippines, on the boundary of tropical and subtropical zone. So it is very suitable for plants to grow. Taipei, my city, is the capital of the country. Taichung, the place of this card, is the third big city and about 200 km south of Taipei. Since you said you like gardening. I choose this city park with a flower stamp.

Nan-ya, Gongliao, Taipei County, Taiwan
Nanya is noted for its fantastic rock formations and sea eroded coral shore. The entire coastline here is a veritable sculpture garden that illustrates, in stone, the incomparable artistry of weathering and wave action.

Taipei City is surrounded by Taipei County. Some people say that the city is special in Chinese world and has its distinguishing characteristic, but the county is cut off by the city and without its own feature. Maybe the wildness and the coast is one of features in the county. I sent this to a German girl who lives inland. I can not imagine how hard people go to see the sea.

Saludos de Taiwan (o Formosa)
Cumprimentos desde a Formosa.
Formosa is the name given by portuguese voyagers in 16 centry. They shouted out 'Ilha Formosa,' when passed by the island. Taiwan is a long shape island. The west side is face mainland China across Taiwan Strait, and most people live on the plain in west. This postcard is the east coast. I like ocean and the colour blue very much. I wonder how far from your place to the coast.

This postcard is about the kettle-hole in Shihtiping in Hualien. Shihtiping is well-known for it sea erosion coast. As I said in the postcard, I like this blue reflection of sky in the hole. Very beautiful. Sky blue brings me a good time.

Postcrossing lets me collect a lot of beautiful postcards. But sometimes I feel short of connection with the sender. I found a pen pal to share some feelings. He sent me NY MOMA Campbell's soup cans of Andy Warhol. This is what I sent for return, which was bought in New Caledonia in 2007.

I was thinking to write a letter to Hsu for his postcard. I saw this ad postcard on the way to the post office. I saw this advertisement and think the subject is interesting. It is a bout a concert of the international year of astronomy, Taipei. Although Hsu can not attend, I hope he can enjoy his time with clear sky in Penghu when he has a hard time in the military.
