Auckland Museum /

Auckland Museum

寄者:許Kk

K Hsu sent some postcards from New Zealand (NZ) a few weeks ago. She, however, did not put enough postage on the cards. Thus, no one got her postcard. I did not expect she would send the second time so soon. But she did before the year end. This is not the first time I saw the image of the Auckland Museum. It appeared in my classmates' presentation when I studied in Australia. It also appeared in the postcard of One Tree Hill which Wang sent to me (on the small hill on top right).

We Must Libertate Taiwan /

Aj Deng came to give me the character postcards which we ordered together. We checked out my post office box together and received this postcard. I let him see the postcard first and did not notice the sender. I thought it is a postcrossing postcard in the beginning and was a little bit pissed off. I really needed a reason why the sender chose this, even a joke is fine. After I turned to the back and found it is from my fellow Taiwanese, there is no need of a explanation. This is the kind of humour among the same community group.

Kayaking Together /

From: Penghu, Taiwan
Date: 16 April , 2009
Sender: H. HSU

The English word for this kind of boat is kayak. It does not imply any single stuff. But in Chinese, 獨木舟, it means 'make in one single piece of wood' or 'handle by one person'. Hsu had gone to Penghu to serve in the military without no one, and he had said he is lonely several times. But he is not alone now. He is just the first one going to Penghu and gets more experience than his friends, like those kayaks laid on the beach together.

I went the southern end of the Taiwan island for a work trip. Before going south, I bought two sets of Pingtung postcards. I also pickec up one from the post office official Taiwan scenic set. I think sending a postcard is a good way to let friends know what you are doing immediately. Or you would never have a chance to talk about the trip.

Postcrossing lets me collect a lot of beautiful postcards. But sometimes I feel short of connection with the sender. I found a pen pal to share some feelings. He sent me NY MOMA Campbell's soup cans of Andy Warhol. This is what I sent for return, which was bought in New Caledonia in 2007.

I was thinking to write a letter to Hsu for his postcard. I saw this ad postcard on the way to the post office. I saw this advertisement and think the subject is interesting. It is a bout a concert of the international year of astronomy, Taipei. Although Hsu can not attend, I hope he can enjoy his time with clear sky in Penghu when he has a hard time in the military.

Hsu is doing his military service now. Since the training stage, I have sent him a lot of mails to cheer him up. After the training, he went to Penghu in March and had two week hard time. Maybe people want to do something different when they have hard time. Therefore, I get the first return postcard fromHsu. Penghu, the place I served in the CGA. I have so many memories there.

Hsieh has been my penpal from internet since 1 January, 2009. We write to each every two or three weeks. I introduced him to postcrossing by my penpal-wanted ad. I told him that I went to Andy Warhol's exhibition in Taipei in January and he sent this to me, the origin postcard he bought from MoMa, NY. As the chicken soup cans in the picture, getting a postcard is a daily act to me now.

This postcard is a reply to my thank you postcard. I visited Penghu as a active participant in September 2008. I did not stayed in this guest house, but the hostess gave me a well guided tour. It is situated in a special village of Penghu, Ai-men. The village is one of the rare villages without fishing port but a beautiful beach. The postcard is a promotion of winter tourism. I started my Penghu life in late November 2007 and ended in July 2008. I love Penghu so much. Everything related to Penghu can make me happy.

After graduated from the university, Wang moved back to New Zealand and have a boring life. I encouraged him to have some hobbies and sent him a postcard. This postcard is my reward. The postmark is just one day later as Wang's signature, but the postcard traveled over two months. An early Christmas card turned into early Chinese New Year card. Postcards are link to the world, but they also can let you learn something new of your place. You need to study very well to write the most important thing in the small piece of paper. This one three hill in Auckland has no tree but the obelisk. I learned some history from Wang. Thank him.

Among lots of postcrossing postcards, there came a friend's postcard. I requested a postcard when Lu told us his travel plan. But maybe I told him too early. He forgot me in his trip in Beijing. So I got his second postcard from Shanghai and again, Shanghai museum. I have no idea of how representative of Shanghai museum to Shanghai is. But this postcard is related to my study and interests, libraries and museums.

This is the only postcard I got in the military in Penghu. Lu served in the president hall of R.O.C., so he got the chance to have any mail to have the president hall postmark. He was interested in sending mail with the mark. I asked for one postcard from him and got this ad-card. What a gift! Nothing relates to the president! Well, I do not think the president can go shopping in the bookstore. How does he buy new book and what  does he read?

Lin and I went to the same university. But we did not know each other untill 2006. I met her in Canberra, Australia, where the name of the place means 'meeting place' in Australian Aboriginals' language. She was the student in college of management and joined the financial world after graduated. She went to Switzerland for a training program and met a guy comes from the school in Australia which I studied in. I think Switzerland is a country that people meet here very peacefully.

Hokkaido is a place not like Kansai where contains so much traditional culture. I have little impression of it but Sapporo Snow Festival. CHEN went a tour on cycle with bicycle members. Hokkaido does not sound like a place for grand tour to me. But it a good opportunity to expand their view. The lavender field and the white clouds are colourful. There must be some big cities in Hokkaido, but the impression of Hokkaido must be countryside to most of Japanese.

Ambiru went for the world tea expo in Atlanta. She stayed in the hotel in the postcard. This building is the CNN center, world headquarters of the Cable News Network. Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and a city in the south. I have not been there. But from Ambiru's description and some readings like Gone with the Wind, I think it must be a very traditional city.

There is only one sentence in the left postcard. 'Hello. I am at Qinghai Lake, feeling cold, and it is raining.' What a good expression. Short but strong.
The second one of the Potala Palace is a complaining postcard. All postcards before from Tibet are sharing their joy, but this one is telling me the pain of plateau life. Well, the cliché is 'no pain, no gain!'

Japan was not a travel destination to me but other people. Mao planned to go to Kansai during her busy study. I ordered a geisha postcard and she made it. Japanese traditional culture is fascinating. If I had the chance to go to Japan, I would go to Kansai first.

Look at all these blue postcards. Are they like paradise?
Most of exchage students in Australia go to New Zealand, Fiji, or Indonesia for international travel. I made a different decision, New Caledonia. I checked the tourism statistics of New Caledonia 2005. There were only 16 people holding Taiwanese passport visiting NC. It sounded like a secret place on Earth to Taiwanese. When I saw the scenery, I realised there is a place postcard-like. I could not upload my pictures to share with friends, so I sent them postcards. I was also afraid of my bad photography skill, so I took pictures of those postcards. Here are them.
