Taiwan reached 300 thousandth of the Postcrossing ID, and I was the lucky guy to get it. In fact, I did not think to join the number fight until I accumulated 5 send-postcard quota about one week ago because I was too busy to write any postcard. When the number was close, I got 9 of quota. I thought I must be the one to get this milestone.
Saturday afternoon, many Taiwanese postcrossers stared at their computer screen. Some people joined plurk discussion and another few people talked on facebook club. When I saw someone reported TW-29997X, I thought it was time to draw.

It was so much fun to draw so many postcrossing ID and address at one time. I checked out the 300000th one first. She liked architecture and the sender's hometown.

I rarely sent the skyscraper Taipei 101 for postcrossing because it was not a common view in Taiwan. But to match this milestone, I thought Taipei 101 is a good choice for the receiver's interests. It was the modern representative of my lovely Taipei. Do you think I made a good choice?

Taiwan postcrossing community held the third meetup on 23 April 2011. 23 postcrossers attended the meetup. Everyone enjoyed a day trip arranged by Taiwan Postcrosser Club on Facebook and National Taiwan University Philately and Penpal Association (NTU PAPA).

Because most of postcrossers in Taiwan live in Taipei, the capital city in the north of the island, it was not easy to organise an activity out of the city, and this discouraged some postcrossers in the south. To give everyone equal opportunity, the organiser of the meetup designed a day trip and hired a coach to take Taipei postcrossers to Taoyuan and to pick up other attendees from south at the Taoyuan Railway Station. The day trip consisted of visiting Taoyuan mail processing centre, a lighthouse sightseeing (the lighthouse was on the stamp issued last summer), the farmer cuisine lunch, and sharing postcards in the farmhouse.
The first stop of the trip was visiting the mail processing centre. It was the first time for the post company hosting this kind of internet base club. But with good communication in advance, the post company let us learn a lot in the centre. Everyone was so excited at seeing the backstage of the post office because every postcrosser was postal service heavy user. The amount of the postcards was a minor in the postal system and postcards were usually deal with hands, not by machine, though.

Chunghwa Post Company established five mail processing centres, Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung in 2000. Each centre cost the company NT$2 billions. The centres deal with ordinary post, while express posts go through local post offices directly. Therefore, all machines did not work on the meetup Saturday. Luckily, the Taoyuan Centre arranged a machine test. There were Culler Facer Canceller (CFC), Optical Character Reader / Letter Sorting Machine (ORC/LSM), Flat Sorting Machine (FSM), A/O Sorting Machine (AOSM), Parcel Sorting Machine (PSM), Material Handling System (MHS), and Management Information System (MIS).
The coach headed to a sunflower farm after the processing centre. Everyone enjoyed the lunch before going to Baisha Cape lighthouse. The lighthouse was the second tallest one in Taiwan. It was the historic site on Taoyuan county heritage list. The post company issued a set of lighthouse stamps last summer, and it was one from the set. The post company also issued a new postal card and the postage mark was it, too.

After all sightseeing, all postcrossers were ready to share postcards. There were too many things to do in the rest of three hours. They sold and bought nice stamps, exchanged postcards, printed date mark on the souvenir postcards, appreciated others postcards, passed and signed postcards, and talked, talked, talked.

Three hours happy time flew fast. No one had time to go to the flower field and it was time to go home.Hope to see you in the next meetup in Taiwan, and wish to have another meetup soon.

This is the first Japanese postcard I receive after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami (10 days after the quake). Although I do not know the sender, the postcard still moves me. It's like the Dove which brought the Olive back to Noah's Ark. Everything is all right there in Japan, and the world is still turning.

I know that most damage was not caused by the quake but by the tsunami. The sea in the postcard looks so peaceful. No one can imagine that it brought such a big catastrophe. I hope that the radiation problem is solved sooner, and Japan back to the normal sooner.

The world is with all Japanese. We pray for Japan.

日本!Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-15534340530363795532011-03-11T20:06:00.102+08:002011-03-22T20:12:50.626+08:00Shortest Travel Time of Postcrossing Postcard / 友情登錄,最速寄達
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doddlu/5517624055/" title="National Taiwan Museum

This postcard was registered on the same day I sent it.

It usually taked two or three days to send a postcard to another Taiwanese postcrosser in Taiwan. So if I got the address on Thursday or Friday, it would take two days longer and reach after the weekend. So when I got this address, I was not quite happy. However, I laughed out after checking the receiver's name.

He was the younger classmates in my university club, Penpal and Philately Association (PAPA). I sent him a message on Facebook then he registered it earlier than I went out to mail it.

The postcards I sent are all written by hand. Thus, handwriting in postcard exchange is important. When we talk about writing, we can not miss out stationery. We now write with a pen or a ball-pen. However, Chinese has special traditional stationery, brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, which we call four treasures of the study.

I went to a stamp dealer shop last September and found a set of maximum cards which I like very much, National Palace Museum postcards of traditional Chinese Stationery. They were issued by the post office in 2000.

While we could not have the treasure in the museum, we could have the same treasure in a stamp dealer's shop. Although my stationery is not very high class, those nice stationery was not used and was kept for ages. No one uses them.

K Hsu sent some postcards from New Zealand (NZ) a few weeks ago. She, however, did not put enough postage on the cards. Thus, no one got her postcard. I did not expect she would send the second time so soon. But she did before the year end. This is not the first time I saw the image of the Auckland Museum. It appeared in my classmates' presentation when I studied in Australia. It also appeared in the postcard of One Tree Hill which Wang sent to me (on the small hill on top right).

2010 was a year with rapid growth.

I sent 391 postcards to 56 countries and received 385 ones from 52 countries. My country ranking rose from thirtyish to 7th. This was the only accomplishment I have only achieved in the year.

We organised the second Taiwan national meetup in April. Then we set up a facebook group for gathering Taiwanese postcrossers. At the end of the year, we had a Christmas postcards exchange on the group. There were about 80 people attending the event. Although comparing with the number of Taiwanese member (13K), it is a small group. Let's wish a bigger group next year.

We have postcrossing contest hold by the National Taiwan University Philately and Penpal Association (NTUPAPA). The contest is still ongoing. There are many big prizes and those who join the contest may attend the 50th anniversary of NTUPAPA philatelic exhibition in May or June.

However, the holder classifies them together just by a simple story.

I saw the left postcard, TW-159606, on Taiwan postcard wall in postcrossing and recognised that it is the Kuang-cheng pier, Chiang-chun South Fishing Port, Chiang-chun Village, Wang-an Township, Peng-hu County. How did I know the exact place it is by the receiver's simple caption 'Fishing port in Penghu County, Taiwan'?

Well, I spent half year working happily on the island and the right room of the building in the middle-top in the picture was my office. The island is some kind of my island. That was an unforgettable period of my life. So when I saw this postcard, I decided to get it, and collect it. I meant it.

I wrote to the Taiwanese sender to ask the source, went to the shop she bought it, and found the shop ended up the business. I wrote to the publishing company, but the clerk said she did not think it's their product. Finally, I asked the Czech receiver to give me the both side of the postcard. Then the company admitted that the card is their product.

I chose a postcard to send to the Czech mate to thank him on the day I got my postcard. He said he like lenticular 3D postcard and lighthouse in his profile. I just had the right one for him. I bought the right one on my trip to Tung-yin, just a couple of weeks before. It did not stay in my stock before it was sent out.

This is the story which connects the two postcards.

Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-7053544759458624532010-09-07T01:26:00.685+08:002010-12-16T03:53:24.746+08:00浪湧東方,信鎖北疆 / A Snail Mail From Tung-yin (Dongyin)

Tung-yin (Dongyin) was not in the landmark postmark list in 2002, so there is no match official postal card. I did not notice that there is a special postmark and did not think I would do some postal work there.

Luckily, a friend who collects stamps reminded me to check out the website of the post office. Yes, there is one. There is also a local panoramic postcard set (8 pieces for NT$150.-) available in a local souvenir shop. (Click the last two pictures to see the eight cards.)

I arrived Tung-yin on Friday, 27 August and planned to leave on Tuesday. I could send all my postcard on Monday but it would be fun to let friends get souvenirs before I went back home. So I rushed to the post office on Friday afternoon, on Monday, ... on Wednesday... and on Friday. Because the ship was stopped by Typhoon Namtheum, I was stuck on the island. So was all post.

I left Tung-yin on 6 September and the trip to a little township ended up to 11 days. The postcard to myself (the top one) was sent on 27 August and reached on 7 September. What a domestic post and what a snail mail!

Sending a international (postcrossing) postcard in Kinmen is a big challenge to me. Not because of the bad postal service but a difficulty of describing where I post it. When we use Republic of China less and less, ‘Greetings from Kinmen, Taiwan’ sounds awkward to me. It is very hard to squeeze all description of national identity change and boundary recognition into a small piece of paper. I, however, want to write my words precisely to be fair to Kinmen People.

The solution I take is a ‘vague’ description. ‘Greetings from Kinmen, a remote island territory of Taiwan along China coast on the west of Taiwan Strait.’ In fact, Kinmen is in Fujien (Fu-chien or Hokkien) Province. It is one of the small parts of Fujien not belonging to People’s Republic of China, but belonging to Republic of China (well known as Taiwan). Kinmen people are also our ‘Fellow Taiwanese’.
Aj Deng came to give me the character postcards which we ordered together. We checked out my post office box together and received this postcard. I let him see the postcard first and did not notice the sender. I thought it is a postcrossing postcard in the beginning and was a little bit pissed off. I really needed a reason why the sender chose this, even a joke is fine. After I turned to the back and found it is from my fellow Taiwanese, there is no need of a explanation. This is the kind of humour among the same community group.

Base on her interests of postcard theme, I choose calligraphy art of traditional Chinese culture. This postcard is from National Taiwan University Faculties, Staff and Students Union Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Art. This year is the fourth time of the exhibition.

Traditional Chinese characters are truly treasures of east Asia. There are many races using them to write their spoken languages. Some races even have derivation characters for their own languages.

Legend of character creation is like this:

Cangjie, (pronounced like Ts'ang-chieh) was the saint who created Chinese characters. In the legends, he had four eyes and there are two pupils in each. This is usually one special feature of saints. He was the history keep officer of the Yellow Emperor. After unifying China, the Emperor needed to remember more things. So he was not satisfied with 'rope knot tying' method, and asked Cangjie to solve this problem.

One day, Cangjie thought of this issue along the riverside. A phoenix flew by and dropped a stick with one animal footprint. While He was wonder what animal made the print, a hunter walked by and told him, 'I can recognise all animals by their footprints'. The idea came into Cangjie's mind. Yes, he could use lines to record everything's feature stroke by stroke.

According to a history book, after he created characters, it rained millet from the heaven and ghosts cried at late night. It is because the nature could not hide its secret and the ghosts could not transform freely. People can write to record and describe.

The Chinese characters transformed several times. The fonts we use nowadays are similar with the ones our ancestors used 2,000 years ago. However, mainland China simplified characters in 1950's and now uses different fonts from Taiwan. We Chinese Taiwanese now still use traditional Chinese while Chinese in China use non-traditional.

The couplet is read like this:

The scenery of the country is good everywhere.
The rain and dew wash everything to a new look.

I prepared many postcards to send to friends who are interested in postcards from an outer isle of Taiwan. But after the trip, I think that I worried too much. Every shop selling scenery postcards only sells Mr. Hsu's work with no exception.

The destination was kept in secret until the postcards arrived. My trip started on Wednesday, 16, a public holiday of Dragon Boat Festival. So all postcards were sent after Thursday. But what a surprise, some friends in Kaohsiung received the cards on Friday. How efficient!!

The picture on the right is the Maximum Card I made. I also put on the scenic postmark on the back. The mark of Green Island is 'the pug and the sleeping beauty'. It does not match the stamp nor the postcard but It really one representative landscape of the island.

The description of the postcard set: Green Island Scenery
Green Island was originally called Burning Island. It is located 33 km east of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean; its land area is 16.2 km2. A submarine volcano created Green Island. Therefore, it is very mountainous, and its highest peak (281 m) is called Burning Mountain. Since this island is volcanic and corroded by wind and water, there are many breath-taking scenes, such as rocks and caves and a mystifying bay. Some of the most famous ones are: the sleeping Beauty, Cow Head Mountain, Sailing Ship Nose, and the Gate Rock.

It was great fun to do those consuming activities. But I have never tried group order yet.

In the middle of June, I'm going to travel to an outer isle of Taiwan. Although Taiwan is not a big country, traveling all over around is not easy, especially to outer isle. I have some stamps of the lighthouse on the destination and there is a post office on the isle providing a scenic postmark. I shall seize the chance and prepare some nice postcards for friends. So, I ask A-j Deng and his friend to buy some postcards with me to share the shipment cost.

One famous provider of Taiwan Image postcards is Chao-pang Hsu. He has a website: TaiwanImage. Here, you can check out his works and catalogue. Email the item numbers and payment transfer receipt, you will get what you like. They only charge NT$30 for shipment. Order over NT$2,000 is free for shipment.

After I emailed my order and transfered the payment by ATM on 8 June, I got a little parcel on 10 June. Look at those beautiful postcards and sets.

Last month, I received a postcard of sailing from a Polish inland city. After I checked the Wikipedia, I found that it was the former capital of Poland and the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000.

I appreciated the postcard so much not only because the theme I like but also the great job the sender had done. The sender, Karolina, tried to find the postcard to match my interests and showed me the culture by telling me a local legend. She was new to postcrossing, so she was keen to write me another postcard to tell me another story . Therefore, I got the second postcard and another story.

Here are the two legends in brief by Karolina:

The first story: The Pigeons and the "Encouragement" Message,

Long time ago, Cracow was often target of enemies' attacks. During one of siege townspeople last their will to fight and hope to win. They were hungry and tired so they started to catch even pigeons but soon number of those birds started to lower, so hunting them became prohibited. Townspeople thought of giving up. Then one brave men sneaked out of the city and took six pigeons with him. Every bird had different colour. Couple of days later first bird returned to town with a message, 'Reinforcements will come in six days. From now on every day people saw a new pigeon with a message, '... five days... four days... ' In final day to town arrived white bird but no one read the message. People believed strong that rescue will come on time so they started to fight and they struggle so hard that they won. After that, they finally read the message and they were dumbfounded because it said, 'Reinforcements were stopped, surrender the city!'

The second story: Wawel Dragon,

Long time ago, there was a dragon living near King's castle. The dragon except for animals ate also young girls. King was afraid of his beloved daughter. He told to knights that the one who'll kill the dragon will receive beautiful princess as wife and half of the kingdom as reward. Many tried but dragon killed all of them. The poor shoemaker called 'Dratewka' made a sheep filled with sulphur. The dragon ate it and burned his throat. He tried to lessen pain and drank so much water from Vistula, Wisła in Polsih, River, that he splitted. Dratewka of course received his reward.
As what you may think, these are very very brief versions because the place of a postcard is so limited. Please use your imagination to expand the stories. Anyone who is interested in the second one, please look up the Wikipedia for more detail. Those who want to check out the King's castle and the river, please check out another postcard at the bottom which I received from Poland before.
Originally uploaded by Dodd Lu

Eric Deng is a brand new postcrosser from my hometown. We met online a few years ago. I sent him a package of postcards to give him a big welcome and got this postcard for reward today.

He has not traveled to Ghana yet but got this postcard from National Tsing Hua University International Volunteer, Ghana Team. We have so little information about Africa in Taiwan, so Africa seems to remain 'The Dark Continent' to us. In fact, Africa has never been dark at all. It's colourful and worth visiting and doing volunteer work.

Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-52155786084153417682009-08-29T02:29:00.013+08:002010-04-18T04:45:08.318+08:00Post Taiwan to the World, Share the Spirit / 分享感動,把臺灣寄出去The CommonWealth Magazine group launched a new activity of 'smile of 319', 'Post Taiwan to the World' on 25 July. They selected 25 images of Taiwan and printed 100 millions postcards to let everyone to post to the world.

It is no doubt that 25 images cannot represent a country, but they surely show the beauty of Taiwan, passion, hospitality, art, life, tradition, modern, technology, simple and plain, and so forth. I am not used to buy mass printing postcards in chain bookstore, but special kind limited in scenic area. However, I would like not only post these postcards, but also collect them.

Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-80992862369932004942009-08-21T03:55:00.014+08:002010-07-04T07:21:28.936+08:00God Bless Taiwan, Pray for Taiwan / 天佑台灣

This postcard is still on my desk. I'm going to send it later in the morning. But I cannot wait to write my blog to share with the world.

Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot in early August. The atrocious weather brought almost annual amount rainfall in four days and caused flood and mudslide. Thousands of citizens lost their homes and hundreds of folks lost their lives. The rescue team is still in action. We could be hit but can not be beaten. We, Taiwanese, now are calling the world to pray for us by this postcard.

God bless Taiwan, and pray for the victims.

So light and so freely.

Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-92041673891788420482009-05-19T17:45:00.006+08:002009-06-07T01:52:03.201+08:00Love Our Planet / 愛行星

Not Just a Card

From: Taichung, Taiwan
Date: 14 to 19 May, 2009
Sender: Nice

Sending postcard can be a kind of propaganda. No matter what picture you choose, you express something. Usually, I prefer neutral postcard, like landscape, nature scene. But this postcard shows me the love of our planet. I love the theme. It is from a Taiwanese friend whom I left a message to on her blog about postcrossing. What a good choice for people from the same country! Thank you Nice.

Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-9410512018683009282009-05-14T22:52:00.002+08:002011-01-07T22:37:54.621+08:00Silk Belt Cuts the Rock / 涓絲之力

Plunge waterfalls are usually like a silk belt falling high on the riverbed. The white water usually attracts most of the sights. However, not only the water but also the yellow rock background and the travertine terrace make up this whole beautiful picture. The amazing power of water cuts off the hard rock and deposits the flat terrace.
Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06324151369718954689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7664472326884949297.post-62527796089371190642009-05-09T19:35:00.006+08:002009-05-13T19:01:26.223+08:00East Side of the Mountain / 山嶺之東

CA-60417

From: Calgary, Canada
Date: 30 April to 9 May, 2009
Sender: Pauline

Pauline

Banff is the first national park in Canada. I know Banff from the premier of Beyond the Arctic. Canada is not a mountainous country, but Rocky mountains are spectacular enough. The park is about an hour and half driving distance from Calgary. In the big country, people have different feelings of distance. One hour driving is far for Taiwanese, but not for Canadian. It seems they drive to the park quite often. The Banff Mountain Film Festival also shows their love of mountain. Although not a lot of people live around the mountain, mountain is still a good represent image of this country. And I believe that Canadians agree that.

From: Wetteraukreis, Hesse, German
Date: 25 April to 6 May, 2009
Sender: roedluvan

This is a postcard of a Christian Saint, Anthony of Padua. He is one of the most beloved saint because he is especially invoked for the recovery of lost things. One of his symbols is book, therefore, he is reading in the postcard. People usually come up with writing when make mention of reading. No matter reading or writing, the reader or the writer look so powerful and beautiful in their own world with great concentration. To write or to get a postcard is not like reading or writing books. But during the short period of a few hundred words, we also become powerful and beautiful.

From: Istanbul, Turkey
Date: 27 March to 4 May, 2009
Sender: Alet

Alet

This Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and Bosphorus postcard traveled almost 40 days.
