Noah's Dove /

This is the first Japanese postcard I receive after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami (10 days after the quake). Although I do not know the sender, the postcard still moves me. It's like the Dove which brought the Olive back to Noah's Ark. Everything is all right there in Japan, and the world is still turning.

I know that most damage was not caused by the quake but by the tsunami. The sea in the postcard looks so peaceful. No one can imagine that it brought such a big catastrophe. I hope that the radiation problem is solved sooner, and Japan back to the normal sooner.

The world is with all Japanese. We pray for Japan.

Aj Deng came to give me the character postcards which we ordered together. We checked out my post office box together and received this postcard. I let him see the postcard first and did not notice the sender. I thought it is a postcrossing postcard in the beginning and was a little bit pissed off. I really needed a reason why the sender chose this, even a joke is fine. After I turned to the back and found it is from my fellow Taiwanese, there is no need of a explanation. This is the kind of humour among the same community group.

Last month, I received a postcard of sailing from a Polish inland city. After I checked the Wikipedia, I found that it was the former capital of Poland and the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000.

I appreciated the postcard so much not only because the theme I like but also the great job the sender had done. The sender, Karolina, tried to find the postcard to match my interests and showed me the culture by telling me a local legend. She was new to postcrossing, so she was keen to write me another postcard to tell me another story . Therefore, I got the second postcard and another story.

Here are the two legends in brief by Karolina:
  • The first story: The Pigeons and the "Encouragement" Message,
Long time ago, Cracow was often target of enemies' attacks. During one of siege townspeople last their will to fight and hope to win. They were hungry and tired so they started to catch even pigeons but soon number of those birds started to lower, so hunting them became prohibited. Townspeople thought of giving up. Then one brave men sneaked out of the city and took six pigeons with him. Every bird had different colour. Couple of days later first bird returned to town with a message, 'Reinforcements will come in six days. From now on every day people saw a new pigeon with a message, '... five days... four days... ' In final day to  town arrived white bird but no one read the message. People believed strong that rescue will come on time so they started to fight and they struggle so hard that they won. After that, they finally read the message and they were dumbfounded because it said, 'Reinforcements were stopped, surrender the city!'
  • The second story: Wawel Dragon,
Long time ago, there was a dragon living near King's castle. The dragon except for animals ate also young girls. King was afraid of his beloved daughter. He told to knights that the one who'll kill the dragon will receive beautiful princess as wife and half of the kingdom as reward. Many tried but dragon killed all of them. The poor shoemaker called 'Dratewka' made a sheep filled with sulphur. The dragon ate it and burned his throat. He tried to lessen pain and drank so much water from Vistula, Wisła in Polsih, River, that he splitted. Dratewka of course received his reward.
As what you may think, these are very very brief versions because the place of a postcard is so limited. Please use your imagination to expand the stories. Anyone who is interested in the second one, please look up the Wikipedia for more detail. Those who want to check out the King's castle and the river, please check out another postcard at the bottom which I received from Poland before.

Eric Deng is a brand new postcrosser from my hometown. We met online a few years ago. I sent him a package of postcards to give him a big welcome and got this postcard for reward today.

He has not traveled to Ghana yet but got this postcard from National Tsing Hua University International Volunteer, Ghana Team. We have so little information about Africa in Taiwan, so Africa seems to remain 'The Dark Continent' to us. In fact, Africa has never been dark at all. It's colourful and worth visiting and doing volunteer work.

Dance Like Cotton /

From: Taipei, Taiwan

This is an ad card from the maker after the ad expired a year. The sender is one of postcrosser I met in the postcrossing meeting, Taipei. She was the member of NTU Modern Dance Club. I went to an union showcase of all dance clubs in NTU, but I have never been to any individual one.

This cotton candy girl is a symbol to me that dancers are flying on the stage like the cotton blown by the wind. So light and so freely.

Sending postcard can be a kind of propaganda. No matter what picture you choose, you express something. Usually, I prefer neutral postcard, like landscape, nature scene. But this postcard shows me the love of our planet. I love the theme. It is from a Taiwanese friend whom I left a message to on her blog about postcrossing. What a good choice for people from the same country! Thank you Nice.

Plunge waterfalls are usually like a silk belt falling high on the riverbed. The white water usually attracts most of the sights. However, not only the water but also the yellow rock background and the travertine terrace make up this whole beautiful picture. The amazing power of water cuts off the hard rock and deposits the flat terrace.

Banff is the first national park in Canada. I know Banff from the premier of Beyond the Arctic. Canada is not a mountainous country, but Rocky mountains are spectacular enough. The park is about an hour and half driving distance from Calgary. In the big country, people have different feelings of distance. One hour driving is far for Taiwanese, but not for Canadian. It seems they drive to the park quite often. The Banff Mountain Film Festival also shows their love of mountain. Although not a lot of people live around the mountain, mountain is still a good represent image of this country. And I believe that Canadians agree that.

This is a postcard of a Christian Saint, Anthony of Padua. He is one of the most beloved saint because he is especially invoked for the recovery of lost things. One of his symbols is book, therefore, he is reading in the postcard. People usually come up with writing when make mention of reading. No matter reading or writing, the reader or the writer look so powerful and beautiful in their own world with great concentration. To write or to get a postcard is not like reading or writing books. But during the short period of a few hundred words, we also become powerful and beautiful.

From: Penghu, Taiwan

Sender: H. HSU

The English word for this kind of boat is kayak. It does not imply any single stuff. But in Chinese, 獨木舟, it means 'make in one single piece of wood' or 'handle by one person'. Hsu had gone to Penghu to serve in the military without no one, and he had said he is lonely several times. But he is not alone now. He is just the first one going to Penghu and gets more experience than his friends, like those kayaks laid on the beach together.

This is a UNESCO postcard from south China. The description is in Spanish. I worked out on that for a while. I thought the first two words was the name of the Place and checked all UNESCO list of south China. But I forgot that Chinese like to send postcards of places far away from their place. This postcard is about the place in Sichuan. It is Pavilion Qingyin, which means the pavilion with clear and melodious sound from the river.

I wondered what were be written and sent? I hoped they tell their friends the beauty of the nature in this National Park, not only the party they had and the busy night market.

When I got this postcard, I thought that they have the sea-like water view. But Foss family said they live in a small farming village of 400 people in the center of Wisconsin. I check their village. It is about 300 km from the lake shore. What a great country! I have been to Ontario but not Michigan. Michigan is the only Great Lake totally in USA. I think Wisconsin section lake shore must be a peaceful section.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport /

Pudong Airport is the newer airport in Shanghai.  An airport is an interesting place. It is not like a plane which can carry people to realise their dream or bring them back with trophies. But here is the place for reunion or seperation with friends or family. Shanghai as a rapid growing city has many immigrants. There must be a lot of stories begining there.

Maria, a Russian girl, sent me this Canadian postcard of Reuters. Although it is not a Russian postcard, she drew some cute icons of Russia, Kremlin, bear, and vodka.
I just checked the transportation for Vancouver Island. It takes about one and a half hours by ferry. This picture is showing the ferry leaving the island and heading to the mainland where most of people live.

Hsu is doing his military service now. Since the training stage, I have sent him a lot of mails to cheer him up. After the training, he went to Penghu in March and had two week hard time. Maybe people want to do something different when they have hard time. Therefore, I get the first return postcard fromHsu. Penghu, the place I served in the CGA. I have so many memories there.
